Rendezvous Croweded Planet

Rendezvous with the Intrepid Margherita and Nick If we can’t get together face to face…let’s do it virtually! This edition of Rendezvous with Rovers highlights one of my favorite traveling couples.  Margherita and Nick are adventurous and quirky and the creators of TheCrowdedPlanet website. I’ve followed them as they’ve visited and written about out-of-the-way spots like Madagascar and Finland.  Whether they are hiking, photographing, or dog-sledding, they seem to have a fantastic time.  As many of you know TheCrowdedPlanet is partnering with us on Weekend Travel Inspiration as well. Let’s find out more about them! Margherita and Nick, I’ve always been a little confused if you are a long-term traveler or if you have a home base?  I know you …

A Rendezvous with Rovers Introduces Anabel Welcome to our latest interview with intrepid travelers! Today we’d like to introduce you to Anabel of Anabel’s Travel Blog. Anabel and I first started talking while we were in the midst of the A to Z Challenge held each April.  Anabel has completed it a few times, and me…well, I don’t have the blogging stamina.  I’ve just done it once.  I did make some great friends, so if you are up for the challenge…go for it. In July, Jim and I were in Scotland, and our first stop was Glasgow which we’d never really visited before. We were so happy to meet up with Anabel and John. Of course it was raining; how …

On A Quest For The Perfect Georgian Souvenir

On the Quest for the Perfect Souvenir in the Republic of Georgia

I’ve completely outgrown buying souvenirs every place I go. Now don’t get me wrong, I love seeing all the locally handmade items, especially textiles and sometimes it takes a very strong will to say no. But I do say no, because I really want to be a minimalist. Why? To be honest I hate to dust. That’s the reason. At any rate, I rarely buy anything other than food items that will undoubtedly be consumed and will never require dusting. A Cooking Lesson and a Quest So, it came as surprise to both Jim and I when I was totally taken with Marta’s khinkali ladle. For one thing, I love handmade, especially crudely handmade, items. Her ladle looked like it was hand-carved and …

Travel Folly to Travel Glory

Travel Folly to Travel Glory

“Look kids! Big Ben, Parliament.” ~ Clark Griswold OK, time for a guilty pleasure confession. You know, how we all have these silly things in life that we enjoy, even though they might be considered lame or embarrassing by our peers, parents, or children? Like watching reality TV or reading trashy romance novels? Well, European Vacation was one of those movies that fits in that category for me. I can watch it over and over. Should National Lampoon have any real travel advice to offer? Should it be an inspiration for travel? I don’t know, but anything that gets us off our sofa and onto the computer or into the books planning the next vacation can’t be all bad. And …

Enjoy the Journey – Stories From the Road

Enjoy the Journey - Stories From the Road

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.” ― Ursula K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness The act of moving is so inspirational to me! With its feeling of going somewhere new, someplace you’ve never been before to explore, to discover. It doesn’t matter that others were there before you, it’s new to you and that is exciting. I envy those folks that are traveling full time that really have the luxury of enjoying the journey. I love reading the adventures of people who are hiking, biking, motorcycling, rickshaw driving, or sailing all around the world. What guts they have! What stamina! You know what I mean. Some people …
