Winter-y Things to do in Titlis, Switzerland

A Winter Weekend in Engleberg Titlis, Switzerland.

I love winter! I love finding that perfect ski lodge, complete with steaming hot drinks and a cozy place to eat dinner after a full day on the slopes. I’m not as much of a skier as I used to be, but I still love the atmosphere. I could hang around ski areas all winter long. One of the best places to do all kinds of winter activities is Engelberg-Titlis in Switzerland.

From the Top of the Mountain

Our day started out amidst the bundled up skiers and snowboarders all jockeying to get on the cable car to the top of the mountain. The cable car is a great ride all on its own. As it climbs or descends, it also keeps turning so that the riders get a 360 degree view of the surroundings.

The Titlis cliff walk is only one of the activities you can do at the top of the mountain. Click here to find out more about Engelberg-Titlis, Switzerland.

Since it’s glacier skiing, you can stay at the top and have a number of runs or go all the way to the bottom and up again. This is an incredible ski area. There are over 82 kilometers of runs in a good variety of blue, red, and black runs, something to keep everyone entertained all day.

If you are like me, though, and your knees are just not what they used to be, skiing is not on the agenda. However, there is still plenty to do on the mountain. At the top of the mountain we headed straight to the famous Titlis Cliff walk, a metal bridge that dangles over the cliff with spectacular views. The chain link is sparkling with icicles and the bridge bounces and creaks as you meander across.

The Ice Cave is another free attraction. Entering the blue space, you can slip-slide your way through the tunnel, marveling at the color, the smoothness of the walls, and the cold. Don’t be like some of those tourists.  This really isn’t the best place to wear heels and a short dress.  Sure you look pretty, but it hurts when you fall.  Be warned.

Since you have a lift ticket, it’s possible to ride the chair lifts around the top where you can walk, sled, make snow angels, or smash a good snowball into your partners’ face. There are a couple of outdoor places to get drinks and some food, but what most people were doing is enjoying the sun, lounging on the terrace chairs.  Sure it’s winter, but the sun can get very warm.

Inside the hut, there is a cozy cafe and restaurant, a place to take photos dressed up like Heidi in Swiss traditional dress, and of course, lots of opportunities to buy a good beer, hot drink and plenty of souvenirs.

To the Town Below

It’s easy to spend a few hours at the top of the mountain, but the town of Engleberg itself has plenty to do as well.  The hotel we stayed in had a beautiful bar with a view.  We couldn’t resist some apres ski cocktails that were as pretty as the valley.  It was a great spot to recap the day, watch the sunset and relax before finding dinner.

Swiss fondue is the most comforting of winter foods. Click here to find out what else to do on a winter weekend in Switzerland.

For dinner we had to have the perfect winter meal, Swiss fondue.  We found a small fondue restaurant in one of the downtown hotels.  There were plenty of choices from traditional Swiss to seafood and many toppings to add later.  Some melted cheese and a good bottle of wine will finish the job of relaxing those muscles and preparing you for a good night’s sleep.

There is plenty to do in the town, especially for kids.  From museums, to shops, cafes, indoor and outdoor activities.  Engelberg should be on everyone’s mid-winter destination list.

I was there when I was young - and our immature group all giggled at the mountain's name. We didn't see the ice cave. too bad.
