It’s All About the Cheese!

As you know, we love cheese, and I think that love affair began with Dutch cheese.  Maybe it’s not as stinky as French cheese or as famous and expensive as Swiss cheese, but it is great cheese.

Edam Cheese Market Square

There are so many varieties of Dutch cheese, after all they’ve been producing it for over 2400 years!  The most popular cheese is Gouda (pronounced with an “H” sound at the beginning), and second is Edam cheese.

Our favorites are the flavored Goudas wrapped up in beautiful cellophane.  It’s very festive looking, so we bought some for all the relatives and sent it home for Christmas one year.  It was a great idea until one box was put next to the fireplace.

Overall, though, if you are heading to the Netherlands make sure you check out their cheeses. Other than Edam, you can visit Alkmaar, Hoorn, Woerden, really just about anywhere.  Some of these towns even hold tourist shows where the cheesemongers carry the cheese in their clogs and weigh it.  If you can’t get out to the little towns, you can still do a tasting in Amsterdam and learn all about Dutch cheese.

Have you ever had Dutch cheese?  Which ones are your favorites?

  1. I’ve told you before…just mention cheese and you have my undivided attention ALWAYS, Corinne. I love Gouda cheese and the recipes I’ve used it in. The only unfortunate thing is cheese and don’t always get along so well. But, I tough it out because I’m not giving it up. Good post, Corinne 🙂
