Reflection #541 – Soweto Tour, South Africa

I’m not a big tour person, but I’d heard a lot about crime and danger in South Africa so I didn’t really want to go wandering into Soweto by myself. After landing in Johannesburg, I took a half day tour to Soweto. This is street scene from that day.

We did so much in that half day, with the highlight for me being a walk down Vilakazi Street. Vilakazi Street is known as the street to produce not one, but two Nobel Prize winners, Archbishop Desmond Tuto and Nelson Mandela. We even went into Nelson Mandela’s home. Awesome!

Reflection #507 – South African Townships – Child Care Center

South African Child Care Center

During our time visiting the gorgeous country of South Africa, we took a Soweto city tour. One of our very first stops was a township with little running water, no electricity or water sewage system.

South African townships are dotted all over the country. Visiting one gives you the opportunity to get to know the country better.

As you can see from the photo, the buildings are made of corrugated tin and are only insulated with carboard boxes. The temperature ranges from too hot in summer to too cold in winter. Meantime this child [...]

It’s a Great Life!

Here’s Devon and me getting ready to go experience a 2,000 year old bath in northern Tunisia.

I’m turning 50 years old today. Wow! 50! It seems old, but I don’t feel old. It has given me time to think about my life…a little reflection, I guess. I wouldn’t trade my life with anyone. I’m so grateful for the decisions I’ve made, the opportunities I’ve taken, the experiences I’ve had. There’s no way I could categorize my experiences into the “Top 10″ or “the Best Of”. Cape Town Harbor – A City with a View

South African Church

We passed this church as we were driving towards the southernmost point of Africa in Cape Aghulas. The sunset was amazing and I think it gives it a sort of other-wordly feel.

South Africa Penguins

The best place to see penguins in South Africa is at Boulder’s Beach. Much smaller than I thought it would be, you can even swim with the penguins there. They are a smaller breed of penguin and quite interesting to watch. Some of them had splashes of pink on their chests. They are now called the South Africa penguin, but you can still find them called by their old name, Jackass Penguin. What a colorful name…doesn’t it make you wonder?
