Meandering the streets of Jordan, there are plenty of perfume stores. Bottle after bottle of essential oil to dab on your wrist and mix to find your perfect scent. After spending three days hiking through Petra’s gorgeous rock valleys, we probably needed to upgrade our “odor.” We entered the shop, and what an experience it is, trying to name a scent that you enjoy, seeing if it works on your skin. Jordanian Bakery
Reaching in with his bread board to stack and remove his flat bread from the oven, the baker is wearing his traditional red and white kaffiyeh and jellabiya. This bakery was located somewhere on the road between Petra and Madaba in Jordan. The baker was accompanied by three helpers, and they formed a sort of assembly line for baking the bread. I travel to see how people live all over the world, how they are similar to me and how they are different. Guess what? I do laundry. I know, weird, right? I don’t know what it is, but I love seeing all the different fabrics, colors flapping in the wind. I try to take laundry shots from all over the world. I really do just love’em. BTW: This photo was taken on a back road somewhere in Jordan.
As I travel from country to country visiting World Heritage Sites, I find it interesting to see how the land is being used. In many or even most places, once the site is inscribed on the UNESCO list, the locals are pushed out, the prices go up, and it becomes solely a place for tourists. This is not so in Petra. This portrait of a woman in a small town in Jordan, not too far from Petra, is one of my favorites of that trip. I love the pinkish columns and the contrast with her black clothes.
The other thing it makes me think of is the perception of many Westerners, sometimes myself included, that women wearing these clothes may not a) be friendly or especially b) not want their photo taken. In the middle of an ubiquitous alley in the middle of Jordan we tried these fabulous felafels. It’s colder than we expected in Jordan in the winter, and a hot out of the oil felafel accompanied by some hot mint tea, is just what we needed to warm up ourselves and rest up a bit before we hit the streets of Amman again. I haven’t tried to make felafel yet, but I think I’d like to try. Does anyone have a good recipe for it?
