Reflection #556 – Fishing Boats in Chile

Fishing Boats in Chile

Valparaiso, Chile, is right on the coast. There are some beautiful beaches and plenty of fishing.

These boats were on the dock. I don’t know if they are waiting to be repaired or if they are just stored that way, but it makes for a nice still life.

We also got an interesting shot of a boat and the fisherman being hoisted onto the dock.

Have you been to Chile?

Reflection #552 – Santiago Statue of the Virgin Mary

Santiago

Not quite as large or impressive or well-known as Christ the Redeemer in Rio, this statue of the Virgin Mary overlooks the gorgeous city of Santiago, Chile.

We took the funicular up the hill and it provided a panoramic view of the entire city. I love a funicular, and this was one of the best I’ve been on.

At the top of San Cristobal Hill, where the statue is located is a nice park to walk around, and many vendors and cafes. It’s a great little jaunt if you are in the city.

Down below, where you pick up [...]

Moai Easter Island

Moai Easter Island

Easter Island has to be one of the most mysterious places on Earth. Just getting there takes a lot of planning and time in the seat. Five hours from Santiago, it’s a ways out there in the Pacific. To think the Polynesians arrived there via canoe (large ones) is mind-boggling. Everyone has seen the iconic moais standing on their pedestals, but I was completely surprised to find have carved moai near the volacano as well as many of them just lazing around on the hillsides like the ones picture here. Of all the places I’ve been, [...]

Chilean Fisherman Catching a Lift

Chile fisherman

After walking the beach in Valparaiso, we headed down to the port to catch these Chilean fisherman coming home.  I’ve never seen them crane the boat and the fisherman before, so this was kind of cool.  The sea lions were surrounding the boat the whole time waiting for the cast-offs, but they didn’t get much on this evening.  The men looked somewhat tired and defeated.  I don’t think it was a very good catch.  We had tried some delicious Chilean bass the day before in Santiago, so they don’t always come home empty-handed, However, on this day, I’m sure [...]

Time Lapse – Easter Island

Easter Island Moais

It’s been a few years since we went to Easter Island…on a whim!  We were planning our South America jaunt to the Galapagos, Peru (read Macchu Pichu), and Chile.  Easter Island kept popping up, but it seemed a little much to hope for and just a little expensive with everything we were already doing.  However, walking around Santiago, we noticed a sale in a travel agent’s window.  It was way too cheap to pass up.  We walked in and bought a ticket.  Talk about spontaneous!  And to be honest, with everything we did that summer, it was still one of [...]

Food Day – A Beach Snack

PaulinaSnacksm

We were in Valparaiso during the Chilean winter, so the beaches were near deserted. However, It didn’t stop this biscuit seller from hawking his wares. I love going to beaches when it’s chilly outside and the only people there are the dog walkers and the hard core beachcombers. It’s much more preferable to the sticky hot summers where you can hardly walk between the beach umbrellas. And there’s something almost romantic about the people who stick around and service those hard core beach goers. They are a hardy folk, just like this guy.
